7 Days, One Iconic Ship, and the Hotdog That Started It All

Our friend Joe — bless him — had one request for the entire trip: a hotdog. Not the multi-course Luminae dinner. Not the espresso martini from Café al Bacio. A hotdog. And since the restaurant doesn’t serve them, the staff went out of their way to have a special order waiting for him at lunch one afternoon. First, let’s talk about what it actually means to be in the Retreat. Since we stayed in a Retreat Suite, we had access to the private Retreat pool deck and bar — and honestly, that alone was worth it. It’s quieter up there, the service is more attentive, and there’s something really nice about having your own space on a sea day.
That said, I will mention one downside: there were definitely non-Retreat guests finding their way up there, especially on busier sea days. It felt more crowded than it probably should have been given the exclusivity you’re paying for. So just know that going in.
Additionally, being in a suite means you get a true balcony — which is a big deal on an Edge Class ship. Most standard rooms on Celebrity Beyond have the infinite veranda setup, which is beautiful but not the same as stepping outside onto your own private balcony. We loved having that option, especially for morning coffee and sunsets.
The Retreat Suite Room: Every Detail Matters
The room itself was stunning. The attention to detail was next level — from the layout to the finishes, it felt like a high-end hotel room that just happened to be on a ship. But the thing that really got me? The window from the bathroom that looks straight through the cabin and out to the balcony. You’re brushing your teeth watching the ocean. That’s the kind of design moment that makes you stop and go wait, did they really do that? They did.
On top of that, we had champagne waiting when we arrived, a proper sitting area, and a bed that I would like delivered to my house immediately.
Dining at Luminae: The Celebrity Beyond Restaurant You Need to Know
Luminae is the private dining room exclusive to suite guests, and it was honestly one of the highlights of the entire trip. Everything we ate was phenomenal — and I have so many food photos that I’m just going to let them do the talking below (you’re welcome). The menu rotates, the plating is gorgeous, and since it’s smaller and more intimate than the main dining rooms, it never felt rushed or crowded.
But what really made it was the staff. By the end of seven days, they knew us. They knew our quirks, they knew our sense of humor, and they pulled off the Joe hotdog moment with zero drama. That kind of warmth is hard to manufacture — it was just genuinely good people doing their jobs really well.
Also, first thing every morning: Café al Bacio. The coffees are delicious, but the real move is grabbing an espresso martini from them after an excursion. Instant reset. 10/10 would do again.
The Ship Design on Celebrity Beyond Is Something Else
Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect from the ship design, but Celebrity Beyond genuinely left me speechless. Every single space felt like a completely different environment. Every bar, every lounge, every nook — there was a clear design intention behind each one, and none of them felt like the others. It’s hard to explain, but you feel like you’re moving through a city rather than walking the same hallways over and over.
However, what I loved most was that despite the size of the ship, it never felt overwhelming. The layout has so many half-decks, tucked-away spots, and little alcoves — especially around the pool area and the sunset bar — that the four of us could always find somewhere to just sit, have a drink, and hang out without fighting for space.
Celebrity Beyond Entertainment and Activities
The entertainment on this ship genuinely surprised me. The theater has an interactive floor and this incredible wrap-around LED backdrop that makes every show feel more immersive than anything I’ve seen on a cruise before. We saw a couple of shows and both were worth it.
Plus, we always find our people at musical bingo and silent disco — and this ship did not disappoint. The silent disco especially was such a good time. We were on the ship during football playoffs too, and there’s a giant outdoor screen set up in this super chill outdoor lounge area with comfortable seating. We watched games out there and it felt more like a backyard hangout than a cruise ship deck. Truly one of those unexpected little wins.
Sunrises, Sunsets, and Why Sea Days Hit Different
I know I sound dramatic, but sunrises and sunsets on a cruise ship are just a different experience. When there’s nothing but open water in every direction and you’re up on the sun deck watching the sky change colors, it’s one of those moments where you remember why you travel. Also, since we were sailing in January, the weather was gorgeous and we were not complaining even a little.
Final Thoughts: Is the Celebrity Beyond Retreat Suite Worth It?
Short answer: yes, with a caveat. If the private pool deck exclusivity is a big part of why you’re booking the Retreat, just know it’s not perfectly enforced. However, the dining at Luminae, the room itself, the service, and the overall experience of this ship — it’s genuinely special.
